Nobby - Collecting box, 1997
This collecting box has been made by automata maker Tim Hunkin.
The figure is based on a local character called Nobby Touzel (1862-1937) who rented out skiffs from the top of the harbour just after the Great War. He was also a note life-saver and was awarded many medals. Over the years 'Nobby' has collected many thousands of pounds for the Maritime Museum.
“Making mechanised museum collecting boxes has considerable attractions. They have a satisfyingly obvious practical function, they command attention (people watch attentively to get their money’s worth) and they are placed in interesting, prominent places (to take as much money as possible).”
